Eating: The well appointed custom made kitchen means that mealtimes are a pleasure whether you eat at the kitchen table or in the adjoining dining room.  You’ll find everything you need to serve up a feast, from the appliances (oven, microwave, induction hob, fridge, freezer, blender, mixer) to the plentiful supply of cutlery, crockery and glasses and even some cookery books for inspiration.  The cupboards are stocked with the basics (salt, pepper, dishwasher tabs etc) and a welcome basket with a few extras will help to start off your stay.

The dining table extends to seat ten in comfort, with additional glasses and crockery for smarter meals.  The wonderful open fireplace, high ceilings and antique furniture make this a great room for entertaining.

If you don’t feel like slaving over a hot stove yourself, why not ask chef Jean-Dominique to come and cook up a storm for you or provide delicious meals for you to heat up yourself.  You’ll also find him at Roundstone Farmers Market every Sunday (Easter through to September) selling his fabulous bread, pastries and cakes alongside many other suppliers of top quality food and crafts.

For other supplies you’ll find a small supermarket stocking all the essentials five minutes away and a supermarket and butcher in Oughterard (30 minutes) or further afield in Clifden or Moycullen.  At the market at Maam Cross (20 minutes) you can find everything from vegetables to live chickens.

There are plenty of options for eating out too.  For afternoon tea in a lovely setting, try Cashel House Hotel (30 mins), which also has an excellent dinner menu.  A similar distance away is Ballynahinch Castle, another spectacular setting for lunch or dinner in the restaurant or pub.  A little closer to home is the Teach Cathain pub and bistro at Kilkerrin (15 minutes) which has a range of dishes including great fish and chips, or try O’Dowds in Roundstone which has an extensive menu – we particularly like their seafood chowder.  You’ll find more shops, cafes, bars and restaurants listed in the house information pack – and if you discover any hidden gems, please let us know! Garafin house is an ideal centre for all sorts of outdoor activities including walking, beaches fishing, cycling golf and horse riding. Although the shoreline at the house is rocky there are beaches and swimming places nearby, which are detailed in the information pack.
Other local activities include mountain biking, pony trekking, sailing, bird and seal watching, and windsurfing.  There are regattas of the traditional sailing boats and canvas curraghs during the summer, and several local potters, art galleries, and food markets to visit.
The Tourist Office in Oughterard is very helpful.
