Sunnybank house is a perfectly maintained ten-bedroom period property, which boasts grandeur and elegance and has a heated swimming pool, sauna dressing room, and tennis court. This property is one of the oldest buildings in the locality, was built by John D’arcey, who founded Clifden town in 1823. The property was originally a residence in mid 1800’s and then had several owners such as the Church of Ireland, then it was a RIC army officer’s retreat. After the Irish Civil War it was sold to the Sisters of Mercy who opened a girl’s finishing school the present owner then purchased it in 1977. Placed in the wonderfully manicured grounds is a 17th century anchor, which is believed to date back to the era of the Spanish Armada. It is to be noted this property was host to Chelsea Clinton on her Irish visit.
