Lough Corrib
Oughterard is well known for fishing as it lies just a few miles from the over 40,000 acres of Lough Corrib – the largest lake in the Republic of Ireland. Lough Corrib is internationally renowned for its wild brown trout but the lake also holds salmon, pike, grilse and perch which are best caught from boats which can be hired in the village. Notable areas of holding lies for salmon are The Narrows, the Glann shore and the Carrick shore. Local anglers troll when targeting salmon, although quite a few fish are taken on fly, including on trout flies by trout anglers. A salmon licence is necessary to fish for salmon. The Oughterard Trout Hatchery stocks the lake every year. No fishing expedition is complete without a stop off at ‘Thomas Tuck’ in Oughterard, here you’ll pick up all the fishing and tackle needs as well as some helpful staff with good local knowledge of the best fishing spots. The fishing season starts on 15th February, when the majority of fish are taken by trolling. Mid-march heralds the emergence of the Duckfly when the fly fishing begins and around mid May the Mayfly hatch promising plenty of catches.
