CONNEMARA BY AREA: BALLYCONNEELY

© Justin King 2000The low lying area of Ballyconneely lies surrounded by atlantic waves. Many beautiful beaches are found here, the most unusual of these being the Coral Strand ,a rich golden beach which skirts the main road between Clifden and Ballyconneely village. In sharp contrast the rocks and craggy islands off the western tip of Ballyconneely threaten many passing boats and fisherman in the area, but also provide a haven for many species of seabird, seals and marine creatures.. The locating of the lighthouse at Slyne Head in 1863 has given a safe passage to many and been a friendly light in © Justin King 2000the night sky to the surrounding area. Among the sand dunes looking towards the lighthouse is the beautiful Connemara 18 hole golf course championship golf links, a must to visit for the keen golfer.

xDun-Loughanxis one of the most secluded and beautiful areas in Connemara with grassy walks lakes and beaches.

The pirate queen Granuaille had her main stronghold here and it is believed that this most formidable woman reared her three children in a castle near Doon hill. Today, however, only the foundations of the castle remain. There are some good brown trout lakes in the area and many opportunities for shore fishing.
