Steep mountains on both its northern and southern shore give Connemara and indeed Ireland its most spectacular fjord - Killary Harbour. This deep winding fjord extends for ten miles and used to be the centre of the herring fishing industry along the west coast. Today it gives shelter to rafts which produce shell fish. Leenane lies at the head of the fjord surrounded by steep green slopes dotted with sheep. The little village was the location for the filming of J.B. Keanes The Field. Two miles to the north of the village where the Erriff tumbles into the Killary is the pretty Ashleagh falls. A recent addition to the killary is a brand new cruise ship which leaves four times a day to give visitors a chance to view the spectacular fjord from the sea.
Travelling further along the road to Louisburgh one comes to the beautiful scenic area o f Delphi. This romantic spot is nestling among the mountains with the lapping waters of Doo Lough adding to one of the most peaceful scenes in the world. Delphi adventure centre will cater for all outdoor activities from absailing to windsurfing.
